Dental Implants Safety
The placement of dental implants requires surgery, and in some cases, several surgeries. While the surgery to place dental implants is considered to be a safe one, any surgery carries with it some risks. That is why it is important to go to a surgeon who has ample experience performing this type of surgery.
The first step in the dental implant placement procedure is for the surgeon to cut your gum open at the point where the missing tooth used to be located. The surgeon will then drill a hole deep into your jawbone. The dental implant will then be placed into that hole. When the gums are closed back up, it can take several months for the site to heal and for the implant to osseointegrate with your jawbone.
Even though a dental implant is made of medical-grade titanium, it is still possible for your body to reject the implant. Just like any other prosthesis, an implant is a foreign entity to which your body may have an adverse reaction. In some instances, an infection can develop at the implant site. This is especially true if you do not practice good oral hygiene. Much like a tooth can fall out due to gum disease, an implant can fail if the surrounding soft and hard tissues become infected. This condition is called peri-implantitis. It is also possible to sustain nerve damage from an improper placement of an implant.
All in all, the dental implant placement procedure is a relatively safe one. As long as dental implants are maintained properly, they can last a patient their entire lifetime.
