Dental Hygiene with Implants
The great thing about a dental implant is that mimics the look, feel, and function of your natural tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even all of your teeth. And unlike any other tooth replacement option, dental implants are designed to last you for the rest of your life. All you have to do to ensure the health of your dental implants is to practice great oral hygiene.
You may be surprised to find out that the way you practice great oral hygiene with your dental implants is almost identical to how you would do it with your natural teeth. It is important to brush and floss twice a day, along with visiting the dentist every six months for a professional exam and cleaning.
While your implant is made from titanium and actually completely resistant to decay, that unfortunately cannot be said about the soft and hard tissues that surround it. If plaque is allowed to build up and lead to tooth decay, it can lead to a condition call peri-implantitis. This condition is very much like gum disease, as it can lead to total implant failure.
When you brush your teeth, try to pay extra close attention to cleaning the gum line of any plaque, food particles, or debris. It is also important to remove these elements from in between your teeth as well. If the implant is creating too wide of a space in your mouth for floss to be effective, be sure to use an interdental brush to clean between your teeth instead.
